Asian flush syndrome, often referred to as Asian glow/Asian blush or just alcohol flush syndrome, has several symptoms that make it easy to identify in sufferers.
NOTE: If you want to understand why a large percentage of the worlds population –both of Asian heritage and caucasian– suffers from Asian flush then you should check out our comprehensive guide to Asian flush and Asian glow that details everything from why a deficient ALDH2 enzyme is responsible for most flushing symptoms, as well as several potential soloutions.
What are the exact symptoms of Asian flush?
Take a look at this clip from the hit TV sitcom 'Fresh Off The Boat' that explains the symptoms of Asian flush in an accurate (and hilarious) way:
As Louis, the father in the video above explains to his son Eddie, the most embarrassing symptom of Asian flush is a bright red face, usually accompanied by slight swelling around the flush affected areas.
Louis: "It's called the Asian flush. It's an allergic reaction. Your body lacks the enzyme to proccess alcohol. It's doesn't effect everyone, your mom and grandma don't have it."
Eddie: "What's going to happen to me?""
Louis: "Well, everyone reacts different. For me, my face gets hot and red, my throat and eyes get itchy and my heart races. You didn't drink much so it shouldn't last long"
Eddie: Great, just another way I'm different from everyone else!
Other symptoms of Asian glow include:
- Redness of face (the most common alcohol flush symptom)
- Redness of the upper body and other areas of the body.
- Swelling of the cheeks.
- Sensation of warmth & itchiness coming from areas of redness on the face and/or body.
- Red eyes.
- Racing heart and pulse.
- Difficulty breathing.
- A general sense of upper body pressure.
Looking well presented and attractive is challenging enough without having to deal with a swollen red face or any of the other Asian flush symptoms listed.
Think about the amount of time we spend shopping for nice clothes, doing our hair, makeup or whatever it is so that we can look our best for an important business lunch, dinner date or any kind of public social gathering.
If you’re unlucky enough to have alcohol flush reaction then all of the effort put into preparing for a night out, or even just a casual day– shopping for nice clothes, doing our hair, applying makeup –can all go down the drain after half a beer!
