The Chinese year of the rooster is upon us this coming new year, which means… well to tell you the truth we’re not really sure, but there are some things about Chinese new year that we can be very sure of: great food, loud fire crackers, dancing dragons and some serious celebratory drinking.
Whether you’re hosting guests or just want to celebrate in style, we’ve got some essential Chinese new year cocktails for you to enjoy (including a bonus flush-free cocktail recipe).
Let's kick things off with three of our favourite Chinese New Year Drink recipes from our friends at Mix That Drink:
1. The Opium Cocktail
This opium cocktail was masterfully created by Joy Daniel of New York based Chinese-Cuban restaurant Calle Dao. It blends bourbon with freshly squeezed red grapefruit juice, tamarind syrup, lemon juice and poppy seeds for a tantalisingly fresh cocktail that will have you coming back for more.
The first thing you'll need to do is fill your cocktail shaker with plenty of ice cubes. Next, you pour in the bourbon along with the tamarind syrup, lemon and grapefruit juices and give it a good shake until all the contents are ice old. Then simply pour it all into a glass of your choosing and finish it off with a pinch of poppy seeds and tincture.
2. Green Dragon Cocktail
Like a lot of cocktails containing Gin, the Green Dragon requires a bit of getting used to. Let’s just say it’s an acquired taste, but once you’ve got a taste for it there’s no turning back! With the distinct herbal flavour of the Gin, the Green Dragon includes a subtle touch of creme de menthe, Kemmel and orange bitters that bring all of the flavours together to form an intriguing yet delicious cocktail.
The preparation is quite easy. Simply put all of the ingredients into a shaker with ice and shake vigorously before pouring the mixture through a strainer into your cocktail class of choice.
3. Blood Orange Margarita
The Blood Orange Margarita is, you guessed it, all about the flavour of blood oranges. Along with that, you throw in some lime juice, Cointreau and silver tequila to concoct a light and refreshing cocktail with a twist.
When mixing everything together be sure to include the sage sprig to infuse the blend with a mild and delicious savoury flavour. Fresh sage leaves have a more delicate flavour than the dried variety in your spice rack. It creates a smooth contrast with the fruity flavours and compliments the tang of the blood orange perfectly.
Fill a shaker full of ice and then put in all of the ingredients, including the sage, before shaking vigorously. You can then top it all off with a light garnish of blood orange or lime slice, or a sage leaf.
4. Bonus Flush Friendly Cocktail - Tito's Sweet Green Tea
Brought to us by the makers of some very fine handmade vodka, Tito’s Sweet Green Tea is also particularly kind to those who experience alcohol flush reaction. The low tannins in vodka combined with the flush fighting compounds in Green Tea make this cocktail a fine choice for anyone looking to reduce the severity of their red face.
Combine the vodka, lemon juice, and honey syrup in a mixing glass and shake well. Fine strain into a chilled cocktail glass of your choice. Fill the glass with ice and then top it off with some cooled green tea.
Why does this recipe reduce flushing?
Tito’s Sweet Green tea helps minimise alcohol flushing because it contains fewer tannins than your average cocktail. Tannins are most common in aged spirits stored in wooden barrels and can cause a minor flushing reaction when ingested. Minimising tannins by using clear spirits like Vodka is one way to help reduce symptoms of alcohol flushing.
Another reason why this recipe is flush-friendly is because it contains green tea, or more precisely, a non-protein amino acid found only in Green tea called L-Theanine.
Extensively studied in Japan, the L-Theanine in green tea has been shown to speed up the breakdown of alcohol metabolites and block flush provoking free radicals from polluting your body. It has also been shown to counteract the alcohol-induced depletion of your body’s in-built flush defences and helps you naturally control the severity of alcohol flushing.
